Pool crews always ran Needles to Barstow, Barstow to San Berdoo. Passenger engine crews ran LA to Barstow and train crews ran LA to Needles. Bakersfield passenger crews changed at Barstow (both engine and train).

Of course the worst job on the train crew were the ASDEs (Assistant Supervisor of Diesel Engines) familiarly called "maintainers". All diesels had them in the early days and they ran through from Barstow to Winslow without change. They had a cot and hot plate in the long FT B unit and slept and ate there among the noise and heat of the mojave desert. My dad got one day off a month during the war and of course slept the entire time. To make matters worse, Arizona had a full crew law requiring a third brakeman to be added, or dropped at Topock and maintainers frequently found their cot occupied by slumbering swing brakemen who were only running to Seligman or Seligman to Winslow.

Its incredible how much the railroader's lot has changed since those days.
