The delay at the derailment scene was about 4 hours. Not unreasonable...track inspection needed before anything can be moved, then cut the derailed unit and inspect the one that didn't derail. If train went into emergency, every single wheel on the train needs to be inspected for a flat. Once underway, add time for the reduced-speed reverse move (luckily they had the AMTK 507, a P32 roadswitcher, and not a second P42) from Niles Jct./Shinn to Newark, and to run around the south wye there. Then EITHER run long-hood forward at reduced speed to Oakland, or turn the AMTK 507 on the wye and tie it back onto the train. 4 hr 47 min late out of Oakland, another hour to enter the Oakland yard, add a lead unit, and depart for Emeryville and points north.

I don't think that's all so bad.
