Mitsy, Marin and Sonoma's environmental communities are some of the most disingenuous groups of people in existence. Marin county itself is a study in having your cake and eating it too.
I'm a fan of the NWP and the railroad, and I'm also wary of the NCRA, for some of the reasons you mention. But this "Marin-Sonoma environmentalists" stuff is total bull, to say the least. If Marin gave a hoot about the "environment", they'd put in mass transit instead of trying to wedge yet more of their their BMW's, Mercedes, Escalades and Prius's onto highway 101. They'de destroy their own waterfront views but putting up windfarms instead of buying their electricity from the same coal-, oil- and gas-fired powerplants the rest of us mere mortals do. The list goes on and on...
With a precious few exceptions the residents of Marin and Sonoma want exactly what pretty much everyone else wants -- money, cheap stuff and security for themselves and their own. This holier-than-thou elitist/environmentalist junk is why so many people despise Marin, Sonoma and California in general so much. It's plain fake.
