11 KCS CARS DERAIL, 5 CONTAIN BUTADIENE, NO LEAKS OR INJURIES
KCS confirmed the derailment of 11 cars of a westbound freight train, early Monday morning. A total of 5 derailed cars carried Butadiene. 3 of these cars remained upright on the roadbed and 2 slid down a steep embankment, coming to rest near U.S. Highway 80. No injuries or leaks were detected and KCS hopes to have the important rail line re-opened today. Evacuations were carried out for approximately one-half of a mile radius from the derailment site.
This line is an important link in the movement of goods from the West coast to the Southwest U.S. Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern recently changed their interchange point from Memphis, Tennessee to Shreveport, Louisiana, with KCS's "Meridian Speedway" being utilized from Shreveport to Meridian. This former Illinois Central line has been totally upgraded and had CTC recently installed to expedite the movement of freight and intermodal on this important and shorter, Southwest Transportation Corridor.
