The original Western Pacific was included in the Pacific Railroad Act as modified by Congress in 1865. It extended from Sacramento to San Jose. It was owned by the same people who owned the San Francisco-San Jose Railroad. The Big Four didn't like the idea of competetion so choked off financing. The original WP was able to build only 20 miles from San Jose into Niles Canyon that was far enough to collect the a bonus from the Pacific Railroad Act. Subsidiaries of Central Pacific completed the line four months after the golden spike was driven at Promontory, Utah, in 1869.

Come ride this line operated by Pacific Locomotive Association this coming weekend. Both steam and diesel trains will be running.
