These posts could have been written in 1910 or 1920. Only the names of the stores and products would have been different. Where can you buy a buggy whip today?
The internet has had a huge influence in retailing.
Today about the only source left for electronic parts is the limited stock at Radio Shack stores. At one time all cities had several radio parts distributers. I have to order from Newark Electronics by e-mail. Newark tries to stock everything that is available. Sometimes their automated shipping systems makes weird mistakes.
For hardware your best choice is McMaster-Carr. Unfortunately you cannot hold the item in your hand or search through shelves for the best option. For some things you have to buy ten when you need only one and you need to pay shipping and handling.
Ain't progress grand?
