S.L.Murray ,you are technically correct in questioning my statement that barges are the most fuel - efficient form of LAND - based transport. Here in the Pacific Northwest, barges are used as an everyday extension of,( and in competition with ) highways & railroads, on the Columbia river/ Snake river systems, and also as the preferred method of freight forwarding to Alaska. My comments were meant to show Rails' advantages over trucks. ( ...and I'm a truck driver by trade... )
