Re: Momentum For Public Cleanup of Eureka-Arcata Rail Corridor Picks Up Steam

No where in Refugee's post was there any mention of punishments to trespassers on the NWP!
My comments were in reference a public official's improper use of assets on projects other than what the legislature apropriated them for. They do go to jail for that!
As a former public employee (before I came to the North Coast) I have seen several get nailed by the FBI. I believe that if NCRA officials did use the NWP r.o.w. for anything other than an operating railroad, that would be misappropriation and could land them in serious legal trouble. (btw, a trail is not compatable with rail except if the r.o.w is very very wide). Besides, just for failing to carry out the legislative mandate to preserve rail service, they could already be in serious legal trouble as it is.
As to those that insist that their own pet uses of public property trumps what it was purchased for, such as those goof-ball tree-sitters on the Berkeley campus, or even rails to trail folks, They are advocating and even commiting thievery - Pure and Simple. And just as obviously - aren't interested in representative democracy, which did already legitimately decide the proper use of all such contested property.
What I really don't get is why supposedly environmentally conscious and world savvy people do
not understand that we had damn well better start to get our rail system restored to its full former usefulness (short and long haul)- post haste!
Could it be that their touted enviromentalism really is nothing but hypocracy - and their world view nothing but naivety - as some on this forum have suggested.
We are already on borrowed time. What if our railroads aren't up to the task by the time we need them. Ya know - when some madman blows up the Middle East (with the bomb that Iran or Iraq supposedly didn't have). It all will go by train then, or it will not go at all!
Now Even if that doesn't happen, the sudden and massive industrialization in the former third world will continue to inflat the price of oil - forever. It's price is not going to go back - ever. Probably sooner rather than later - It still will go by train, or it will not go at all.
And what is so "realistic" about fiddling with trails while Rome burns. The area is already in deep economic depression. It will not ever recover without full rail service. Permanent poverty is already knocking at the door.
Wait till later for the railway? Pie in the sky you say? A trail you say? It will be a trail to hell!
You better get baking, enough to fill the whole sky with pie! Or ther'll soon be no one left in America with enough wealth to build rail or trail - or bake pie either.
But enough rant - I already left the idiocy of it all behind anyhow. Had to - needed to eat! Didn't get a dime for my place either - wouldn't sell at even half price. The tax man 'll probably get it before it does - then you can build all your sacred trails on it - on all ten acres. Oh! It doesn't view the beautiful Eel River! Sorry!
