While welded rail may be more prone to sun kinks if not properly installed, there are many more factors that come into play including maximum temperatures, tie condition, ballast condition and section, anchors, rail size, tonnage and if unidirectional. I have had a vertical sun kink and one on a bridge - both jointed rail.
