Bridge Railway (Key System) tracks on Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge had slip joints about every 1/4 mile (my guess) to prevent problems cause by different expansion of rail and bridge and to accomodate bridge sagging under heavy load. These joints caused a 35 mph speed limit on the bridge.
