A lot of the locomotives, particularly in the first half, are
either German or ex-German (left behind or sent to other
countries after WW II).
Particularly notable is the class 18 (BR 18), which was restored
only a few years back in Germany. This 4-6-2 was/is rated at
1,600 hp and had a top authorized speed of 160 km/h (about 100
mph).
This engine was built by the East German railway administration
after WW II, in part with components from other locomotives, for
testing of new coaches authorized to operate at up to 160 km/h.
After restoration at the beginning of this century, it operated
for one year in bright red but was then repainted into its
original green color.
As is the case with many preserved U.S. locomotives, the engine
often operates in excursion service with a second tender to give
it more range.
