"Transition" comes form Latin (via French) and means "place across". In railroad terms "transition" means the reconnection of traction motors from one set of connections, usually "series" in which the traction motors are connected in series with each other, to another scheme of connections, normally "parallel" in which the motors are all connected in parallel (as the locomotive speeds up). This is "forward transition"; "backwards transition" is the opposite of this process (as the locomotive slows down). Modern thyristor control etc. has done away with transition.
NOTE: this is the simple explanation, without mention of series-parallel and all that.
