I honestly don't see old #19 ever pulling the Siskiyou Summit, even if the YWRR had the chance to do so. It would have to have diesel / dynamic braking helper to get the consist down the grades safely, not mentioning that it would be a real struggle to get it up grade without help. While slipping the wheels is exciting for the observer, it is extremely detrimental to the boiler (sudden massive introduction of cold air on the back sheet and fire flues), and to the running gear of a 92 year old locomotive that has not seen adequate maintenance for many, many years!
Old #19 needs alot of work. Money is short for the YWRR and volunteer workers are as rare as hen's teeth. We have a couple who show up faithfully to RUN the 19, but "don't have the time" to help with the heavy, dirty work. You know who you are as you read this, don't you?
If you really want to help save the YWRR and keep the Blue Goose with #19 rolling, then I invite each of you to give your blood, sweat and tears .. as well as your ridership support, and prove your dedication to the preservation of steam in Siskiyou County and enhance the prosperity of the YWRR. Use it or lose it!
