A good friend who has worked in the freight car world for over 30 years provided the following insights:

"If a car was built after July 1, 1974, its life is now 50 years. Increased Gross Rail Load eligible cars, 263K to 286K, need to meet certain requirements to qualify. In many cases this necessitates neither structural nor truck changes, as long as a degreed structural engineer certifies car structure and foundry validates truck castings."
