The SW-l's were built with standard 62/15 gearing which they retained during their tour of duty. What made the EMD's superior over the 70-tonners was their wheel slip control system.

When the EMD's wheel slip system detected a wheel slip condition they reduced generator excitation by dropping out the shunt field relay to control wheel slip where the 5100's system merely sounded a buzzer which told the engineer to reduce the throttle which was trainlined on the mu'd units.
