I seem to recall that some later era large steam engines did have traction motors and/or booster trucks under the tenders, or rear trucks to assist in providing additional tractive effort when starting heavy trains. I seem to recall that some of these engines may also have had steam powered boosters, as well. But, I am not sure about the Big Boy.

At any rate, unless you have a handy drop pit to use, it's gonna be pretty damn hard to steal the copper windings off of the traction motors.......
