Europe allows "tram trains" and conventional rail equipment to co-exist on the same tracks. Rather than "temporal separation" (required by FRA beause the equipment does not meet the crash standards existing equipment; this standard is about to be increased) the French use an automated train control system to prevent head on and rear-end collisions.
