Frank Saarni was about to be inducted into the US Army, but managed to crowd in one more short trip...on December 3, 1944, he took rode an extra SP train out of Oakland to Port Costa behind Mountain 4341. He then walked back to Crockett and caught the westbound San Joaquin Daylight to Berkeley behind Mountain 4350.

Two days later, Frank rode passenger 224 behind Pacific 2473 from Oakland to Sacramento and then got on 3126 at the head of train 202 to Marysville. Frank spent about a week here and some or all of that time was at Camp Beale. He noted that SP 0-6-0 1171 was working at the base.

On the 13th, he was on WP train 11 out of Marysville and rode it to Oakland. He then got on SP train 74 behind Atlantic 3000 and rode it to San Jose.

There now exists a big gap in Franks travel notes, but he does show as being at Camp Roberts from December 27 through April 25 of '45. He did note the following while there:

Dec 27- 1-37 with 4333 and 2466
Jan 13- 99 with 4450
Jan 14- 98 with 4446, train 37 with 4337 and 1-778 with 3688
Jan 20- 37 with 2424 and 4333, X2855E, 98 with 4458, 2-788 with 3704, 1-786 with 3703, 3-788 with
3676
Jan 21- 785 with 3707
Feb 25- X4194E
Mar 2 - 1-786 with 3727, 2-786 with 3658, X3686W, X2855W, X2468W, 99 with 4457
Apr 1- X3683E, 772 with 4333 and 2372
Apr 14- X2448W, 37 with 4355, 98 with 4458, 99 with 4452
Apr 17- 1-72 with 4438
Apr 25- 98 with 4458, 776 with 4325

Again, note the use of passenger power on some trains. Several of the heavy Pacifics spent a great deal of WW2 in freight service on the Coast Division, namely 2466 and 2468. I know that engineers with high seniority got to work pool passenger and would spend months in this service.
One of these men was a gent named Reynolds and he frequently had Walter Johnson as his fireman.
