During World War One, Butte had more than 100,000 citizens working the mines in support of the war effort. Some speculate we may all be speaking German if not for Butte.
John Ryan was on the board of directors of the Milwaukee Railroad, Anaconda (Copper) Mining Co and Montana Power Company which had hydroelectic plants from Great Falls through Thompson Falls. The early electrification of the Milwaukee in Montana was the ultimate win-win-win for all three entities.
