Rim Fire (Yosemite) logging bill slated for House action

A bill by Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove (Sacramento County), to allow salvage logging in Yosemite National Park is scheduled for a House committee vote Thursday.

The Yosemite Rim Fire Emergency Salvage Act is unlikely to be enacted, given opposition from the Senate and environmental groups. McClintock argues that logging will help local communities and the forest by clearing burned trees. The Rim Fire burned 400 square miles in August and September, and the Obama administration has denied Gov. Jerry Brown’s request for disaster aid.
