When we were looking for our north Idaho home 11 years ago, there were indeed realtors at a couple of developments right up against UP's ex-SI main who insisted there were only two or three trains a day, even though I told them I knew otherwise. (Today there's anywhere from eight to 12 trains or more a day.) We chose something within sight of but not too close to the UP. My wife has talked to other homeowners who bought right next to the track and most of them said they were misled with tales of "hardly any trains" or "they'll be ripping these tracks out next year." The latter is a reference to the Bridging the Valley project, which is proposed to someday shift UP's main line trains over to a new track along BNSF's Funnel between the Spokane Valley and Athol, Idaho. But that change, if it happens at all, is still several years out.
