indeed the clamshell covers were a poor experiment. Even in the 70's at least one P&LE car had all that removed and was a simple gon. I took B&W's of it @ Judson Steel in Emeryville--now a shopping 'paradise'. the clamshells weighed much more than the hoods, and the hoods had few moving parts to mistreat.
