Thanks for adding the photo. There's quite a story behind this aircraft...she was part of a formation of 3 flying at night in poor weather. All 3 were lost when they flew into the side of a mountain in Hawaii. The wrecks were salvaged many years later and rebuilt. This one was in Texas and was damaged by rising waters from a heavy storm and thus became available for Chris Prevost who rebuilt her.
I think she had one .30 caliber Browning and one .50 caliber Browning. Fuel tank was mounted to the firewall foreward of the pilot. There was one civilian model built and it had two seats.
If you'll look at the way the gear retracts into the side of the fuselage, you'll see that it is just like the gear on the later F4F Wildcat. Not positive, but the radial engines were the same too or nearly the same. Chris went to a lot of trouble to alter this newer variant so it would replicate the original Wright R-1820-22 radial @ 950 hp. Initial rate of climb on The Barrel is close to 3,000 fpm. A rare and historic flying machine.
I should add that she had been assigned to the Marines in VMF-2.
V- heavier than air (not a balloon or dirigible)
M- USMC
F- fighter
