Do these trains have a blended controller? And, is there any possible configuration where the engineer thought he was applying dynamic braking? There was a report that the engineer reported a "brake failure" of some kind. Was this the dynamics or air brake
The question from above is a good one-the engine went to idle from "what" (dynamic braking-or power?)??? Going into emergency was to be avoided, if possible, as your dynamic braking would cut out, and you could often hold a train better with good dynamic braking and a maximum application, better. So going to "idle" after big holing the train, isn't as important and knowing from what?
I also saw another report that indicated that the braking times were from the head end came off the rails (not to a stop?). The report I saw said that emergency braking was reported to have occurred only a matter of seconds before actually derailing.
