They could have had some. I have a refer history book with pictures of 4 wheel short refers from that time period (the picture is Hormel). I wouldn't doubt some boxcars were also built. They were about 20'-25' in length. I know that in the 1960's you could pool boxcar shipments among several nearby customers to receive a full car and have it spotted at several sidings before it was completely unloaded.
