Fresno Bee gradecrossing photograph

McKinley & Blackstone

The right-hand head on the center island appears yellow/amber. Since grade crossing heads always have red lenses and alternate between red and dark, is the color in the photo caused by the camera? The human eye can't see this yellow/amber from a red lens.

Note that the McKinley traffic head that appears above the cab of the locomotive appears dark. This close to the grade crossing, the head is required to be interconnected with the grade crossing system and must be showing steady red from the top lens. Signal failure?

These are the sort of things that collision investigators and signal inspectors watch for.

Some of the verbiage above does not conform to traffic engineer practice. "They" have their own language. Do railfans, have our own language? You bet we do.
