The Portland Streetcar and MAX Light Rail are built with 115RE rail which was delivered in 80 foot lengths and flash butt welded into longer strings which in turn thermite welded in the field.

Compromise thermite weld kits are used for joining the girder rail to the 115RE rail. All current trackage is being built with concrete ties where the initial line to Gresham was built with wood ties.
