Siemens has built mainline diesel electrics for a number of European railroads.
See the following Wikipedia entry:

The Austrian version of these "Eurorunner" locomotives is the class 2016. They have
been well liked and have performed well -- other than for a needed upgrade to the
dynamic brake system on the very first few units produced. Later units came with the
upgraded dynamic brakes. The early units ended up generating too much heat with
prolonged dynamic braking.
Austria has lots of mountain grades and some mainline sections have grades above
3 per cent.
The Austrian 2016 diesel-electrics have many components in common with the classes
1016/1116/1216 straight electrics, simplifying the stockpiling of spare parts.
