Again, the criteria isn't just miles. There's no way in hell that a driver and a set of doubles
can profitably haul rock from Cabazon to Gardena based on traffic and time. The same distance
in the Eureka area might take an hour and a quarter-big difference. Dick is certainly right on
captive hauls, the only exception (as we have in the Midwest)is tonnage. D&I hands off 8,000 ton
trains of rock and they're owned by the originating company (which I guess comprises half of
Dick's argument). None of these conditions exist in the Eureka area, the quarry, the railroad and
the barge company are all separate entities. As for an expert, I'm not, if I was I would have
tried to bite off a smaller piece years ago and worked off Dick's model.
