Not trying to start a war here, but I also have old remembrances of really loooong NWP trains back in the 70's & saw reports of freights of 170 cars or so.
Best summer I ever spent was in '72 running the ex Pickering Lumber Heisler 10 (& sometimes 2-8-2T 17) at Klamath for Gus Peterson. There was a lot going on up there then as all the previous posters pointed out. Anyone remember the narrow gauge steam @ Alton? Cute little operation.
I do hope though, that something good comes to fruition on the planned tourist line around Humboldt Bay...that makes some sense & would be nice to see as well as providing some income for that area.
