To return to long NWP consists, back in 1978-79 I watched a northbound train of empties pass through Ignacio--it was the middle of the night, but I distinctly remember the engine consist being an SD45X, a U33C (honest!), two SD45s, and six SD9s. If I counted correctly, the train had 221 cars! (And I did make a point to count--I'd first seen the train at Sears Point, was amazed by its length, and went over to Ignacio to watch it again.) AFAIK, any power could be run as far as Willits. Oh, for some daylight and a camera!
I agree that the Alton-Pacific was a marvelous little operation. Anybody know what's become of the 2' gauge equipment?
