I don't believe that Gus had any health issues that forced him to let go of the railroad. His partner, Dick Childs, died in late '71 or early '72 and that left Gus to try to run both the tourist railroad and his lumber mill. Dan Ranger was hired to run the railroad and he, in turn offered me a job in '72 to act as his relief each week.
Gus lived into his 90's and remained a real likable character. I wrote an obit on T.O. a couple of years ago...it could probably still be found through a search.
Dan & I both have many "Gus" stories, some of which are even printable. He was a great gent.
