It was the volcanos and the ash plumes that polluted the air 10,000 years ago that led to global warming, and got us out of the last ice age.

How did things like traction motors fare with the ash? Seems like those things are pretty sensitive to environmental conditions (ie, 1 inch of water above the rails will ruin them). Filters and windshield wipers are probably a given to be replaced following an ash dump.
