Beauty and the Beast - 4449 style.
When 4449 was done with Freedom Train duties she was returned to Portland by way of a number of AMTRAK sponsored excursions. On April 27, 1977 she ran from San Louis Obispo to Oakland. In the first photo the train is on Stenner Creek Trestle just after departing SLO, working up Cuesta Grade.
Later that same day the train is approaching San Jose and the effects of steam cleaning decades of diesel exhaust from the ceilings of the Cuesta Grade tunnels is sadly evident on the previouly pristine locomotive. A different kind of steam cleaning would be required before the Oakland-Dunsmuir leg of the excursion. I'm guessing that the crew learned to ease up in the tunnels and let the diesel do most of the pulling.
