I've seen smashed autos loaded high on a barge that came over the bar more than once recently.

Yes, the Columbia River Bar is one of the worst in the world, but in theory it would be a day trip from Garibaldi to Astoria, thus the likelyhood of getting stuck in bad weather is lessened.
