In San Clemente, the White Horse across from the pier next to the pizza joint has fabulous food and a great view of the tracks from about 1/2 of the seats inside and all 3 tables on the patio. Dinner for 2 with wine will run you about $80 to $100. One of the best in San Clemente! Surfliner and Metrolink action all day, sporadic freight activity. We found dinner reservations at 7:30 (usually) work great to capture the southbound freight. Dress Yuppie casual.
In San Diego, in the Gaslamp District (Quarter?) try Lou & Mickey's, right at the tracks. The patio and the perimeter tables with window seats on the south side have a great view of the tracks. Dinner at 8 pm gave us a northbound manifest (odd?) and a northbound vehicle train. Southbound manifest (and vehicle trains) seem to roll into San Diego around 10 pm or later, less predictable. Coasters rarely go by at night shuttling between layover adjacent to MDT and BNSF yards to depot, didn't see any Surfliners that far south. Food pretty good, Italian mainly; dinner and wine will run 2 just slightly less than White Horse, $70 to $90. Dress anything except tee-shirts.
