One more came to mind...and it's long gone, having been a victim of fire a few years ago.
East of Guatemala City on the old IRCA was the town of Zacapa, which had a yard, shop & roundhouse. It also had the Hotel Ferrocarril. Rooms here were $4.50 a night US funds and that included a 4 course dinner as well as breakfast the next morning. The dining room had these beautiful high ceilings with slow turning fans...the place looked right out of a Hollywood movie set. There was no charge for the bartender taking you back behind the bar to see the machine gun bullet holes in the wall, a leftover from the communist revolution in the 50's.
The clerk always put the railfans in the upstairs rooms. There was a wide veranda outside your room where you could sit on a low chair and take in the steam working the yard.
It was just great.
