Guess I should have emphasised Trackside CampSITES. Not that there's anything wrong with Trackside CampGROUNDS. I second Tom's comment about the Lyons Ferry (WA) campground below Joso Bridge. That place has undergone its ups and downs over the past few years when the state of WA sold it to a private operator, who eventually let the place run down, only to have the Army Corps of Engineers take it over again and get it back up to snuff. Haven't been there in over a year, so I don't know the latest conditions. Great family-friendly desert camping, fabulous shots of the bridge right from the edge of the campground in morning light (while the rest of the family is still asleep) or at dusk. Great Northwest's Ayer Turn makes a round trip beneath the bridge on UP's Riparia Sub Sun-Fri. But what I was getting at from the get-go was the kind of campsite where it's just you and your vehicle, a few friends perhaps, out away from where other people could bother you. Just far enough from the track to not attract unwanted scrutiny from the railroad, but close enough to allow memorable sights and sounds while you cook dinner under the stars. Hepkema pointed out some of these.
