Okay, you guys have played along nicely. I'll let loose on a couple of mine. Tunnel 4 on Stampede Pass, but not the west end as noted by George, but rather the east end just outside the long snowshed. Actually, it's a dirt clearing between the shed and Stampede siding, right on the edge of the slope. Great sights and sounds as an eastbound works up through the loops below you and eventually emerges from the tunnel, grinding right past you. Ayer Junction, WA, a couple miles west of Joso Bridge and Lyons Ferry campground mentioned earlier. Drive access road west along the Riparia Sub, duck under Joso Bridge, take the left fork and follow track clear to the junction with UP's Ayer Sub. Parking next to signal bungalow overnight might get you reported, unless you clearly look and act like well-intentioned railfans. Better off crossing to south (railroad east) side of track, where there's more room to park away from track. Grade of old quarry spur visible to the south. Coyotes are usually heard around midnight. Hear northbounds for quite a while as they motor up the Snake River. Southbounds, however, can really sneak up on you, so BE CAREFUL. Barge traffic makes for extra fun. Increasing number of weekend partiers have been camping down below near the water's edge, but you'll be safely hidden from their view. DISCLAIMER: These two sites are on railroad property. Without written permission to be there, you could get busted.
