Train smashes car after crash
Staff reports
January 18, 2008
An apparently drunken man driving on U.S. 395 in Stevens County rolled his car down a 50-foot embankment onto railroad tracks just before midnight Wednesday. He got out before train demolished his car, but he was taken into custody for DUI, Washington State Patrol Trooper Mark Baker.
The crash occurred about 11:50 p.m. three miles north of Kettle Falls. The driver, 56-year-old Derral White of Kettle Falls, did not receive serious injuries from his car rolling down onto the railroad tracks, Baker said.
"After he got out, the train hit the car," Baker said. "After an investigation, he was arrested."
White was driving a 1999 Geo Prism. It was resting on it's top when it was hit by the train, which sustained minor damage, Baker said.
The trooper was not sure how well the Prism fared, but guessed it was a total loss.
