Well, OK, the scenario went pretty much as you point out, the car "with the open top" was ultimately cut out and left on the siding.
But... (according to the radio) Main track 1 was out of service for some 4 hours while all this happened. Gotta wait to cut the car out, gotta wait for the dude from the car shop to show up, gotta wait for the car shop dude to relay that he can't fix the situation, gotta wait for the car to be placed on the siding, gotta wait for the train to back up to the rest of the train, gotta wait for the the following train to inch up to the train in question to "push the button" on the FRED.
All in all, it was an interesting event in railroad operations.
