We used to have some friends who lived in Paicines, just south of Hollister, who were very "down" on the Southern Pacific. The stated reason was that, once upon a time, the area was known as Tres Pinos. The SP was to build a rail line south from Hollister to Tres Pinos. Well, when they had built as far as they were interested in doing so (not quite as afr as the intended location), they just called the point where they stopped "Tres Pinos" and said they had fulfilled the promise/obligation. So, te fols in the real/original Tres Pinos (1) didn't get their railhead, and (2) had to change the name of their location!

True or not, that was their story.
