Verona, NY -- A Madison County man called his son to say he was sorry for what he was about to do, then later Sunday he and his wife were struck and killed by a freight train on railroad tracks in the Oneida County town of Verona, state police said.

Earl L. Myatt and his wife, Mary M. Myatt, both 59, were standing in the path of an eastbound CSX freight train at the intersection of Fox Road in Verona about 1:37 p.m. when they were struck and killed, troopers said in a news release.

Troopers had received a report that the Myatts were missing from the city of Oneida. Bradford Myatt had contacted police after his father contacted him and said he was "sorry for what he was about to do" before ending the call, according to state police reports.

Troopers described Mary Myatt as having "diminished mental and physical capacity" because she was recovering from a brain aneurysm at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility. State police found a suicide note in Earl Myatt's vehicle near the scene. CSX Railroad personnel helped with the investigation.

State police are continuing to investigate
