I don't know about in the big cities, but I do know that in the rural areas, the local UPS hub receives the UPS SurePost parcels from their nearest distribution center and then the local drivers deliver them that day to the local Post Offices.
Federal Express Ground may lag behind UPS by a day, but they perform virtually the same task as UPS. Federal Express Ground SmartPost parcels are delivered by the local driver to the Post Office.
USPS does a very good job with their Priority Mail and First Class parcels. USPS Priority Mail is certainly faster and usually less expensive, when compared with standard UPS and Federal Express Ground shipping rates.
