A long cable will pull the trains between the BART station and airport. Here's what Shed47 had to say on T.O. last month:
The Oakland(CA) Airport Connector, a 3.2 mile fixed guideway automated people mover cable system connecting the BART Coliseum station with Oakland's airport, continues to move forward with a projected opening this fall. The four 3-car trains--designed by Doppelmayr Cable Car of Wolfurt, Austria--will run on 4 1/2 minute headways and replace the current shuttle buses. A central drive unit at the Doolittle Drive operations center powers the system with a fixed grip assembly connecting the train to the cable. The cable propels and brakes the train with the train having no on-board drive motors, gearboxes or brakes.
Since delivery the trains have only made infrequent appearances outside of the maintenance facility but this morning one was posed for all to see on the east side of the shops. The three cars of this set are numbered 2.1, 2.2 and 2.9--future expansion will see a fourth car added to each train.
