In the summer of 1963 I took the Klamath from the Bay Area to Albany, Oregon to attend JESSI. That's The Junior Engineers and Scientists Summer Institute at Oregon State.

I surprised staff when I phoned to be picked up: "How did you get there?". I was riding on my father's pass and that's what I could ride.

It was a single coach on the end of a long string of mail. We stopped long enough that the conductor said to follow him to the restaurant for dinner and when he left we had better too.

JESSI was so much fun. Suddenly you found that there were a LOT of nerds just like you. I got so involved that I didn't phone home for weeks... Got hauled out of class and ordered to phone Operator ## in Oakland collect. Oooh, I caught hell.
