Under normal conditions the UP uses the canyon for westbound heavy freights only. These consist of two North Platte to Roseville manifests (MNPRV and MNPRVB) and loaded grain trains. Grain originate at various points in the Midwest enroute to points in the Central Valley (Turlock, Travers, Pixley, etc) where there are large poultry farms and processors. Frequently though, when Donner has a problem or when there are work windows there, many trains, both east and west are rerouted via The Canyon. So, generally under "normal" conditions the UP fields three, or four trains, all west bounds, a day.
BNSF runs at least two manifests each way daily up The Canyon to Keddie. Barstow to Pasco, WA manifests (BARPAS-PASBAR) and Barstow to Vancouver, WA manifests (BARVAW-VAWBAR)run daily, but there is also a Bakersfield train in the mix (BAKPAR) but it doesn't run on a daily basis and I have no knowledge of its operations.
any further information, or corrections are welcome.
