I seem to remember a discussion outlining that the short overpowered stack trains were due to most of the consist being left in Reno, and hot inter-modal being forwarded to OAK. I was waiting in Sacto for the 2:20 corridor train last week, and this train was waiting to follow us to OAK, the engineer, spent the delay isolating 4 of the 5 locos in the consist.

I have also seen the eastbound edition follow Train 522 in the morning to Sacramento.
