Our chief of surgery at my medical center had been in the Air Force at the time and he and his wife were stationed up there in Anchorage or nearby when it hit. They were native Californians who were used to "shakers" but their story of this experience was truly horrific. As a native Californian, the worst I have experienced was the Loma Prieta in '89 and that was "good enough" for me, thank you very much!! :-)
