Photo's, rule book, and operations

Yes, I did take photo's, mostly on the ground. In the cab I was working! I was still using film and scanned some. I probably should upload them to my Flickr account and provide a link.
One of my souvenirs from that trip is an old Signaling Rule book, in Polish. It has a page showing the headlight aspects. It lists the single ditch light aspect as "oznaczenie przodu i tylu lokomotywy manewrowej", which translates to "marking the front and rear of the locomotive (for) shunting" (no, I don't speak Polish. Google Translate does!).

It was an interesting operation in when I was there. We were running to both Lezno (south) and Poznan (east). The run to Poznan was fast paced , 50 miles with 15 intermediate stops. Think Caltrain, but steam. The 5:30am train was all commuters from the small towns along the line going to Poznan, most getting off at Debiec to transfer to the streetcar line into Poznan. Amazing how many people would spill out, it must have been quite "cozy" in the cars...
The later 8:15am run to Lezno, 30 miles and 11 intermediate stops, was mostly high school students. We would lay-over in Lezno and bring them back at 3:30pm. Enough time in the lay-over to explore a nearby narrow gauge, or even to deadhead into Poznan and back.
Motive power was a nice mix, all coal fired: a couple of Prairies (Ol 49, the standard branch line engine), a Mikado (Pt 47-112, an old beast leaking steam all over. Nothing like driving in a cloud) and their Pacific (Pm 36-2, my favorite. Big efficient fire box and drove like a sports car).

So, what got me into this? Trains Magazine ran an article (July 2005)on the Wolsztyn Experience and their program of signing up people for a week of firing and driving steam, with the regular Polish crew naturally. My first reaction was, no this can't be real. Followed almost immediately by I have to do this. Very glad that I did. So nice to run a real operation at track speed.
